Performance Coaches

Coaches Korero – November 2023

November 2023 Issue No 3

Kia ora Koutou ngā matanga nō te ao hākinakina, tēnā koutou.
Welcome to the third edition of Coaches Kōrero.

Coaches Kōrero has been established by Sports Performance Coaches New Zealand (SPCNZ) to recognise and celebrate our Performance Coaching community in New Zealand.

In this issue we profile current Football Ferns coach Jitka Klimková and Mike Hesson, former Black Caps Cricket Coach and Sport Performance Coaches New Zealand board member.

Andrew Longley, a team performance expert with a background in psychology & applied neuroscience shares his third instalment in his ongoing series. This month the he talks about building identities within teams.

I am excited to advise, that Sport Performance Coaches New Zealand will operate as Te Korowai.

We have had a series of workshops led by Hone Rask, Te Huarahi and Yvette McCausland-Durie to establish an appropriate operating name and we have landed on Te Korowai, as a name and symbol that most appropriately aligns with our purpose.

Sport Performance Coaches New Zealand (SPCNZ) is a professional body that has been established to represent and support the Performance Coach Community in NZ.

Our purpose is…

“As a collective group of sport Performance Coaches, we are passionate about sports coaching and are driven by a desire to positively impact elite athlete performance.

We aim to grow a sustainable independent community of collaborative sport performance coaches.

We are committed to advancing the profession, through high ethical standards, on-going capability development, strong advocacy and the support and celebration of sport performance coaches both individually and collectively”

Te Korowai – “He rau whenu – Kotahi te Kaupapa: Many strands – collective vision”

The Korowai is often referred to as a cloak. Each Korowai has its own story woven into the garment. It is a form of art which connects through an appropriate whakapapa (genealogy) and narrative.

Metaphorically, Korowai is also referred to as a form of shelter to protect, uphold and uplift the mana of the wearer. Te Korowai was chosen as an appropriate name for Sport Performance Coaches New Zealand based on the role that SPCNZ has to provide a “wrap around”

Each coach brings their own stories and whakapapa. SPCNZ’s role is to support each coach on their coaching journey, adding strands to their individual Korowai as they grow and develop.

Kua whiriwhiria ngā wāhanga e whā o te korowai hei
whakarite atu ki ngā mātāpono matua o te kāhui neil

Three different strands of the Korowai have been selected to represent the main purposes of SPCNZ:

Tāniko: Origins and Culture

Kaupapa: Purpose

Remu: Outcome

We look forward to bringing Te Korowai to life as we evolve as an organization.

As mentioned previously, we are looking to build our community of Performance Coaches, so please pass on this newsletter to anyone who might be interested and also pass on contact details of our Interim General Manager, Andrew Gaze for anyone to get in touch:

Jitka Klimková

“In 2027 we want to advance out of the group at the World Cup.”

Football Ferns Head Coach, Jitka Klimková, understands the assignment.

“We needed to have the first win at home (at the recent FIFA Women’s World Cup) and learn from it and build it. It’s clear to me we can get out of the group.”

The 1-0 result against Norway in the opening match of the tournament was the Football Ferns first win at a World Cup and set the tournament alight. Football fever swept around the motu and Klimková was at the heart of it.

Mike Hesson

A debilitating back injury ended Mike Hesson’s playing career in his early 20s, but looking back, he’d say things have worked out pretty well from there. His six-year stint as Black Caps coach saw the side progress to the number-one ranked T20 side in the world, the test team rise to second in the rankings, and in a life highlight for many Kiwi cricket fans, he steered the ODI team to its first Cricket World Cup Final in 2015.
