Welcome to the sixth edition of Coaches Kōrero. Coaches Kōrero has been established to recognise and celebrate our Performance Coaching community in New Zealand.
We recently had a board offsite to review the last six months and plan for the year ahead. In reviewing the last six months, we realised we had delivered on a number of key projects that have laid the foundations from which we can build a programme of work.
Over the last six months we have:
- defined our Purpose & developed our Constitution.
- incorporated as Sport Performance Coaches NZ Incorporated.
- appointed and established a Board.
- established a trading name: Te Korowai – Sport Performance Coaches New Zealand
- created a brand identity.
- built and launched our website – www.te-korowai.org.nz
- established a monthly newsletter – “Coaches Kōrero”.
Looking forward into 2024 we have signed off on our Key Pillars:
- Support & Wellbeing
- Celebrating Excellence
- Networking & Learning
- Building a Sustainable Model
And agreed on our 2024 Key Priorities:
- Create and build ”Value” for our Performance Coaches

Craig Mustard
Canoe Racing NZ – Lead Coach New Zealand men’s kayak squad
Leaving his native South Africa to further develop his coaching skillset was a dive into the unknown for Craig Mustard but, ultimately, it couldn’t have worked out any better for himself or New Zealand kayaking.
Making a seamless transition from competitive kayaker to coach at a young age, Mustard built an extensive coaching resume in South Africa, covering a variety of roles with a different range of athletes, including involvement at world championship and Olympic campaigns.
Kiri Wills
When Robinhood Stars ANZ Championship Netball Coach, Kiri Wills started coaching she immediately knew coaching was for her.
“I just loved it right from the minute I started and I still do today.”
An upbringing in the far north of New Zealand surrounded by people is part of the reason why Wills believes she was initially drawn to team sports.
“Everything my family did we did we did with heaps of people around. Because of this I’ve always been a social person and I enjoy being round people.”
