Coaches Korero – May 2024

May 2024 Issue No. 9

Kia ora koutou ngā matanga nō te ao hākinakina, tēnā kotuou.
Welcome to the ninth edition of Coaches Kōrero.

Coaches Kōrero has been established to recognise and celebrate our Performance Coaching community in New Zealand.

In this issue we profile Rowing NZ’s James Coote and the six ANZ Premiership Netball Coaches – Tia Winikerei (Mystics), Kiri Wills (Stars), Mary Jane-Araroa (Magic), Anna Andrews-Tasola (Pulse), Marianne Delaney-Hoshek (Tactix) & Reinga Bloxham (Steel)

Andrew Longley, a team performance expert with a background in psychology & applied neuroscience shares his latest instalment in his ongoing series. This month he talks about Coaching for Better Wellbeing via Sleep.

Last week, the board met and reviewed the first quarter of 2024 and signed off on the Membership and Wellbeing programme that we launch in the next few weeks.

With the Olympics less than 100 days away, we congratulate those coaches who have helped athletes achieve selection for the games and empathise with athletes and coaches that have not gained selection.

All the very best with final preparations for Paris 2024. Be sure to be looking after yourselves at the same time to support peak coaching performance when it counts!

Ngā mihi,

Tom Willmott
Chair

James Coote

James Coote is in the business of setting goals and achieving them.

“My ultimate goal was to coach for my country at a World Champs and Olympics,” he tells. “But I always knew it would be harder to be taken seriously, as I wasn’t an elite athlete myself.”

After taking the women’s double sculls crew to silver
at Tokyo, and having coached multiple crews to World Championship medals, he knows the winning feeling well. In a few months’ time, he will head off to his second Olympics in Paris, coaching the women’s double (Lucy Spoors and Brooke Francis) and lightweight women’s double (Jackie Kiddle and Shannon Cox).
