Welcome to the latest edition of Coaches Kōrero.

Coaches Kōrero has been established to recognise and celebrate our Performance Coaching community in New Zealand.

In this issue we profile Craig Kirkwood, coach of both Hayden Wilde and Sam Tanner and Paralympic Equestrian coach Andrea Raves.

Andy Longley presents article ten in his series “The art of neuroscience of high-performance coaching”. In this article the focus is on Coaching for Optimal Athlete Growth.

We have had two changes to our board. We farewell Mike Hesson who has stepped down following many years of involvement formerly in the High-Performance Coach Advisory Group and more recently Te Korowai. I would
like to pass on a massive thank you Mike for your service
to coaching. I know we can continue to rely on your future support and input on an ad hoc basis. All the best with your current and future coaching and life endeavours!

It is my pleasure to welcome Andrew Leete to our board. Andrew is a lawyer and avid sport supporter from Christchurch who joins our board to help provide legal expertise to complement our existing skillsets. Great to have you onboard Andrew!

Our focus of the next few months, is building our funding base, as we have a goal of being a fully independent sustainable representative body. A key element is building a strong and vibrant Membership.

In return for becoming a member you will immediately join a special community and gain access to a range of advisory services, including our bespoke Wellbeing offer. Over the next few months we will launch additional value-adding services.

The annual membership fee is $360.00, or you can establish a 12-month automatic payment plan and pay monthly ($30).

In return for becoming a member, you will immediately join a special community and gain access to a range of advisory services.

We believe we are building a compelling value-adding membership programme, so we encourage you to sign up.

Craig Kirkwood

Eleven years after taking a leap of faith, there’s been no looking back for Craig Kirkwood, his expertise in helping two rookies, in particular, transition from aspirants to world-class athletes rubber-stamping his decision.

Taking a circuitous route before making the plunge into fulltime coaching, Kirkwood had a wide-ranging resume across many facets of track, triathlon and endurance running over many years before redundancy forced the issue, resulting in the birth of CK Coaching.

Andrea Raves

A deep-seated passion for horses, coupled with a thirst
for knowledge and a fondness for problem-solving, has helped propel Andrea Raves to the top echelon of dressage coaching in New Zealand.

Assisting the late Julie Brougham to the Rio 2016 Olympics and World Equestrian Games in Tryon 2018 was one of Andrea’s career highlights. While more recently she has revealed her impressive versatility by coaching Louise Duncan, in sync with her horse Showcase BC, to the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games.
