February 2025 Issue No. 18
Koutou ngā matanga nō te ao hākinakina, tēnā kotuou
Welcome to the second edition of Coaches Kōrero for 2025.
The Coaches Kōrero has been established to recognise and celebrate our Performance Coaching community in New
Zealand. Each month we profile two of our Performance Coaches.
In this issue we profile Tom Stannard, Rowing NZ’S co-lead coach of the Women’s Programme and Verity Sharland,
current coach of the NZU21’s and the championship winning Falcon’s team in the recently established Premier Hockey
League.
We also have the first in a series of articles on legal matters that are important to consider as a Performance Coach. In
this issue, our legal partners Tavendale + Partners present on the Employee v Contractor debate – what are your rights,
responsibilities and options.
In addition to the articles, Tavendale + Partners are offering
a free consult for all Members of Te Korowai – Sport
Performance Coaches New Zealand.
With this in mind and the other services, we offer including
the free Well-being consult, I would again encourage you join so you can enjoy the benefits a membership brings.
The annual membership fee is $360.00 per year, or you can
pay monthly ($30) by establishing a 12-month Automatic
Payment.
If you would like more information, you can contact us on [email protected].
Ngā mihi,
Tom Willmott

Tom Stannard
Like so many of us, Tom Stannard came to a crossroads in
life. One path led to music, a passion that had fuelled a fire
within. The other led to sport, his other pursuit. Growing
up, he’d split his time between both. It was a balancing act
that by his own admission had left his schoolwork fairly
compromised.
The common ground at that crossroads was his interest
in guiding others. Stannard had been teaching music.
Alternatively, he could advance his coaching career in
rowing.

Verity Sharland
Verity Sharland has a passion for helping the next
generation, and has influenced many of New Zealand’s top
hockey players.
A former representative of the Junior Black Sticks, Sharland not only coaches’ young hockey players, but also influences youth through her role at Feilding High School.
