October 2023 Issue No 2

Kia ora koutou ngā matanga nō te ao hākinakina, tēnā kotuou.
Welcome to the second edition of Coaches Kōrero.

Coaches Kōrero has been established by Sports Performance Coaches New Zealand to support and celebrate our Performance Coaching community in New Zealand. The feedback has been extremely positive about the first issue, particularly the section that celebrates the achievements of our coaches around the world.

We are only a few months old but we continue to build positive momentum as a new organisation. We held our second board meeting and the first in person on the 18th of September. We had a fantastic time together, working through a number of key matters, including our short and midterm deliverables. A key focus in the short term is building a programme of work that delivers value, that connects, supports and advocates for `our performance coaches in New Zealand.

Andrew Gaze our Interim General Manager has been tasked with completing the setup of the organisation, facilitating the build of our website and brand identity and preparing our launch plans.

In the Coaches Kōrero, we will look to profile 2-3 coaches, share insights from industry experts and take theopportunity to recognise achievements and milestones from across the Performance Coaching Community.

In this issue we profile former world champion trampolinist and now coach of Dylan Schmidt Angie Dougal and former US Olympic cyclist and now our Men’s endurance cycling coach Adrian Hegyvary.

Andrew Longley shares further insights on the importance of building a shared purpose with your athletes and teams.

Enjoy the read!

As mentioned above, we are looking to build our community of Performance Coaches, so please pass on this newsletter to anyone who might be interested and also pass on contact details of our Interim General Manager, Andrew Gaze for anyone to get in touch:

Ngā mihi,

Chair

Angie Dougal

“We get it wrong by focusing on winning.”

At first glance, these words don’t seem like they would come from a high performance coach, especially the coach of a current world champion. But listening to Angie Dougal, it makes complete sense, and she has the results to prove it.

Adrian Hegyvary

Whilst humble and modest in nature, there is little doubting the positive impact Cycling NZ men’s endurance coach Adrian Hegyvary is making to the team’s bunch racing skills.

New Zealand traditionally boasts a strong pedigree in
the team pursuit, however, Adrian, a US Olympian in the Madison, has gradually changed perceptions and put a greater emphasis on bunch racing on the track.
