Frequently Asked Questions

What is Te Korowai – Sport Performance Coaches New Zealand (SPCNZ)?

Te Korowai – Sport Performance Coaches New Zealand (SPCNZ) is a professional body that has been established to represent and support the Performance Coach Community in New Zealand.

How is Te Korowai – Sport Performance Coaches NZ structured?

We have incorporated as an incorporated society.

Our members are Performance Coaches who meet the definition of a Performance Coach as defined below.

At a governance level we have a board that is made up of Performance Coaches and Independent Members. The majority of the board must be Performance Coach Members.

What is the definition of a Performance Coach?

A performance coach is a (current or past) professional coach whose primary focus is on coaching elite individual athletes and teams to achieve performance at a high-performance level.

Are there different “types” of Performance Coaches?

Yes we have broken down the definition into four sub categories to clearly define the depth and breadth of Performance Coaches in New Zealand. We have endeavoured to provide examples to assist.

  1. Kaumatua Performance Coach – Retired Performance Coach, but I am happy to stay connected to the coaching community for mentoring, networking and support for others. e.g. Sir Graham Henry, Dame Lois Muir
  2. International Performance Coach – I am coaching high performance athletes and/or teams who are competing on the world stage. I have a leadership role as a coach. e.g. Dame Noeline Taurua, Gary Stead, Gordon Walker, Jason Ryan, Raylene Bates
  3. Domestic Performance Coach – I am coaching high performance athletes and/or teams who are competing either domestically or internationally for a club or franchise. I have a leadership role as a coach. e.g. Kiri Wills, (Robinhood Stars – Netball), Peter Fulton (Canterbury Kings – Cricket), Clayton McMillan (Chiefs – Rugby), Donovan Grobbelar (Auckland Aces Asst Coach – Cricket)
  4. Aspiring Performance Coach –  I am currently coaching at a representative level, and I have been endorsed by my NSO and have aspirations of becoming a high-performance coach one day.

How do I get an endorsement from my NSO?

Each NSO will be different, so please make contact with your High Performance Lead to get clarification on their endorsement model.

From a membership acceptance we will be looking for a letter of endorsement from your NSO, to confirm you are a current, past or aspiring Performance Coach.

I no longer coach at the level described in the definition of a Performance Coach. Can I still be a member?

Yes, once you have “ticked the box” as a Performance Coach as per the definition, you can be a member. Maintaining your status as a Performance Coach is not time-bound.

I run a Performance Programme at my school and/or at my club. Can I become a member?

Unfortunately, you can’t become a member unless you have previously held the position of a Performance Coach within a National Sporting Organisation (NSO) or you are endorsed and considered an Aspiring Coach by your NSO.

What is the process of becoming a member?

Each NSO will be different, so please make contact with your High Performance Lead to get clarification on their endorsement model.

From a membership acceptance we will be looking for a letter of endorsement from your NSO, to confirm you are a current, past or aspiring Performance Coach.

The board will then review the application and make a decision based on the definitions above.

Is there an annual membership fee?

Yes the annual membership fee is $360.00 per year ($30.00 per month /or $1 per day).

For $360.00 per year you will receive:

  • Access to our Wellbeing Programme
  • Connection to the Performance Coach Community via events and newsletters
  • Access to advisory services – wellbeing, legal, financials etc.
  • A free pair of adidas running shoes valued at $240.00

We want to be a sustainable organisation and for us to achieve this objective we will need to charge an annual membership fee.

What is the wellbeing support offer for Members?

We are offering two types of wellbeing support to our Performance Coach Members:

  1. We have curated a fantastic set of resources related to wellbeing that are exclusively available to our Members. These resources will be in the form of TED talks, expert videos, free websites, and the latest published research articles that our Members can use to develop their expertise on all things wellbeing.
  2. We are also offering bespoke and targeted support for any Member coaches who are struggling with a wellbeing issue themselves.  We are providing free access to a high-performance coaching and wellbeing expert so that our Member coaches can have a confidential conversation with them to help them move forward and improve their wellbeing and performance.

This confidential conversation is fully funded by Te Korowai.

If additional support is needed by our Member coaches beyond this conversation, our Te Korowai expert will provide a referral to the right professional to help.

These professionals are fully endorsed by Te Korowai, have deep experience working in the high-performance community, and bring qualified expertise on the range of wellbeing challenges.
