Te Korowai

‘He rau whenu – kotahi te kaupapa
Many strands – collective vision’

Korowai is often referred to as a cloak.

Each Korowai has it’s own story woven into the garment.

It is a form of art which connects through an appropriate whakapapa (genealogy) and narrative.

Korowai are bestowed upon people as a form of esteem for the individual.

Metaphorically Korowai is also referred to as a form of shelter to protect, uphold and uplift the mana of the wearer.

Relevance of Korowai to Te Korowai – SPCNZ

Korowai was chosen as an appropriate name for Te Korowai – Sport Performance Coaches New Zealand (SPCNZ) after multiple workshops.

Korowai reflects the role of Te Korowai -SPCNZ to provide a “wrap around” for Performance Coaches in New Zealand.

Each coach brings their own stories and whakapapa.

Te Korowai – SPCNZ’s role is to support each coach on with their aspirational goals, adding strands to their individual Korowai as they grow and develop.

We extend our thanks to Te Huarahi and Hone Rask for guiding SPCNZ with the cultural narrative connected to ‘Te Korowai’.  Their whānau origins are from the Far North (No Te Aupouri), both are secondary school educators (Palmerston North and Christchurch respectively) who are passionate about sharing a view of Te Ao Māori to wider audiences.
